Various versions of it have been in the making for so long and I hope this is going to be the final formula!

THE MIST SUNSCREEN EXPERIMENT!

For years, my customers have been asking me to make a sunscreen. So, why haven’t I?

The biggest thing holding me back has been the SPF testing. You can’t just calculate an SPF from your ingredients or the percentage of zinc oxide in your formula. The finished product needs very expensive specialised testing to establish its actual protection.

For a small, independent natural skincare brand like MIST, access to the specialised equipment and testing facilities required is a major hurdle. Without verified results, I can’t put an SPF number on a bottle and I’m a numbers person! So that has been putting me off taking the plunge!

But I do have fair skin and 2 kids who spend a lot of time outdoors so I decided I need to at least give it shot!☀️

I made TWO experimental versions:
☁️ One with a mousse-like marshmallowy texture.
🍦 Another with a more balmy lotion texture.

The ingredient line-up really is great, all the oils and ingredients are chosen for their natural spf and antioxidant properties:

🌿 15% Non-nano zinc oxide – a mineral UV filter that helps protect against UV radiation.
🍃 Green tea extract – antioxidant support.
🌱 Tamanu oil – nourishing and soothing with a high natural spf.
🧡 Sea buckthorn berry oil – rich in carotenoids and antioxidants.
✨ Vitamin E – an antioxidant that helps protect the oils from oxidation.
🥕 Carrot seed oil – adds nourishing plant compounds.
💛 Shea butter – moisturises and supports the skin barrier.
🌿 Aloe vera – hydrates and soothes.
🌰 Castor oil – adds richness and helps with texture.
🌱 A tiny touch of peppermint essential oil.

Next comes refining the formulas, checking stability and determining whether reliable sun protection can be achieved!

First Attempt at a Spicule Serum!

  • This is very exciting – we’ve been testing my first attempt, and I’m loving the results so far.

    As far as I can tell, only two companies in South Africa are working with spicules – and both are doing quite intense peels. Quite a few spas offer it as a treatment as well – about R1500 for a mask/scrub. We’re taking a different approach for home use: gentler, more nourishing, and designed to be used once or twice a week and left on your skin overnight for best results.

    Expect smoother, more radiant skin in one day – and even better results over time!

    But what are they?!
    Spicules are a cutting-edge liquid exfoliator powered by bioactive freshwater sponges. These are microscopic silicate needles that create controlled micro-stimulation within the epidermis. These naturally derived silicate structures act as liquid microneedles, creating microchannels in the skin to promote cellular renewal, accelerate keratinocyte turnover, and improve overall skin tone and texture. They work over 24–72 hours as they gradually dissolve, stimulating the skin from within.

    Our formulation includes a carefully balanced blend of Salicylic Acid to unclog pores, Glycolic Acid to improve texture and brighten by exfoliating and reducing scarring, hyperpigmentation and wrinkles. Glycolic acid, an Alpha Hydroxy Acid derived from sugarcane, works by dissolving the bonds between dead skin cells, encouraging fresher, more radiant skin to emerge. I’m thinking of combining it with calming and hydrating ingredients like aloe vera or camellia seed oil, which is rich in oleic acid and packed with antioxidants, it helps rebuild your skin’s barrier, calm sensitivity, and lock in moisture to keep it balanced.
